NIT - Elders, Altman call for apology, end to intervention - 6 Sept 17
.
.. “It’s a biodiversity threat. You could see disease coming from feral animals and issues like that, but also the whole management of these remote lands is being undertaken by Indigenous people living in these remote communities.
“They are providing a national service and they should be recognised and properly rewarded for the work they do. These are communities that are of strategic, economic and environmental value to the nation and we should support them and not demean them.”
Professor Altman said the Australian and NT government neglected remote communities, which were important centres for Indigenous language and culture.
He said a decade of federal government intervention in NT Aboriginal communities had resulted in the most entrenched poverty in the nation. ...

Melbourne Catholic - Eminent Australians join voices to call for an end to the NT Intervention - 29 Aug 17
- includes photos and short video clip
... The Intervention, stated Professor Triggs, has led to disempowerment of the Aboriginal people, a total loss of dignity and respect. It was imposed from the top, without consultation.
And what, she asked, had it achieved in its ten years?
‘There was no significant difference. The impact continues to be negative. School attendance is down, sexual assault convictions have not dropped, indigenous youth incarcerations have increased. So too youth suicide in Aboriginal communities.’
‘Every measure has failed,’ said Professor Triggs, ‘because of a total lack of any meaningful engagement with Aboriginal communities, because of racially discriminatory laws that are in breach of fundamental human rights.’
The Indigenous Elders who had journeyed to Melbourne spoke of their despair at the prospect of another five years of the Intervention.
Dr Gondarra OAM (first name withheld for cultural reasons), Djirrikaymirr spokesperson for Yolgnu Nations Assembly said, ‘everything has been taken from our people. We have been left with nothing. The Intervention must stop.’
‘It is the government,’ he said, ‘that has created this damage and it is the government’s responsibility to repair that damage. It is time for a coming-together of people towards a lasting peace.
‘Let us begin a process. Come. Come and sit with us. Come and talk to us. We are innocent. You have taken everything from us. Please, now, come and talk to us.’
Dr Gondarra’s plea became more passionate.
‘In ten years our assets have been taken away, our community councils have been crushed.’
He also reminded his listeners of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s promise that there would be no more ‘stolen generations’.
‘But it’s still going on,’ he lamented.
‘I have a message to all the people of this land. If you believe in justice and all human rights, join us and make your voice heard too. The First People seek your comradeship and your solidarity.’
‘We need to re-write the history of this country,’ he concluded. ‘It’s not 229 years old!’
Also addressing the gathering, having travelled from the Northern Territory, was Rosalie Kunoth- Monks OAM from the Eastern Arrernte.
Rosalie too described what she labelled as ‘the abusive assault, done with impunity, on our people.’
‘How long,’ she asked, ‘are we – collectively as Australians – going to tolerate this outrage, these unmentionable crimes committed against my people?
‘I was there 10 years ago when the police and the army arrived. Nothing has changed. Just my pain – it has doubled.’
To great applause from her audience, Rosalie pointed out that the current farce in Canberra over dual citizenships would never be happening if the Aboriginal people were in charge!
Her final remark, however, was much more sombre.
‘It’s not a joke when kids hang themselves.’ ...

The Age - Australian values: Whither my country on matters of morality? - 29 Aug 17
...Scrap NT Intervention
The former Chief Justice of the Family Court, Alastair Nicholson, has called for the scrapping of the "Intervention" in the Northern Territory. Introduced 10 years ago, it purported to try  to root out paedophilia in remote Indigenous communities.
This was a false claim. No paedophiles have been arrested. It is a failed policy.
However, its real aim was to assimilate traditionally oriented Aboriginal people. In conjunction with the NT government, self-management through locally elected town councils was swept away in 2008 in favour of shire councils run by the government.
Bilingual education was abolished, endangering the survival of dozens of Indigenous languages. This now needs to be reversed. Relationships between First Nations people and other Australians will only improve when the former are seen as part of the solution, and not just "the problem". Scrap the Intervention now.
