GLW - The Territory turns against the Country Liberal Party - 2 September 2016
... One independent candidate who is doing well is Yingia Guyula, whose candidacy was covered by GLW. The August 31 Australian quoted Guyula as saying: “There's people living here. There's humans living here. There's a Yolngu government that has been running for thousands of years — for thousands of years, there has been education, justice, leadership, law and order, economy on this country.” Guyula is the Yolngu son of a crocodile hunter who campaigned on a platform of bilingual education, recognising the traditional forms of Aboriginal governance in the NT and a treaty with Aboriginal people to ensure this. At the time of writing he is 35 votes ahead of deputy ALP leader Lynne Walker in the seat of Nhulunbuy. There are still postal votes to be counted, but anecdotally it appears Guyula has won most of the Yolngu-majority areas in Nhulunbuy and his success represents a huge upset, regardless of the final result.

Dean Whittaker - Some of my thoughts on the NT Election and Yingiya Guyula... - 29 August 2016
... The Northern Territory election on Saturday has been seen as an amazing triumph for Labor and thumping for the Country Liberal Party. It clearly has been a landslide victory for Labor, and CLP leader, Mr Giles, looks like he may not win his seat. There has been a huge amount of media attention on these things. A third remarkable event has hardly been mentioned. The battle for Nhulunbuy. In the face of a Territory-wide landslide shift to Labor, Nhulunbuy is doing something quite different. Labor have held the seat of Nhulunbuy since 1980. Lynne Walker was first elected in 2008 and is highly regarded by many. Her seat has been Labor for 36 years straight, and was regarded as very safe Labor, needing a 13.8% swing according to Antony Green and the ABC. The Tally Room said Labor should have no trouble retaining Nhulunbuy, which is their safest seat. Yet something has happened this election. Lynne Walker is in the fight of her life for the seat of Nhulunbuy. I would not be surprised if she were to lose. Yingiya Mark Guyula is standing as an independent with an emphasis on Treaty. ...

Yingiya Mark Guyula - Treaty Now! Yingiya Mark Guyula Independent Candidate for Nhulunbuy NT Legislative Elections 2016 - 16 August 2016
... In 2011 leaders in East Arnhem Land founded the Yolngu Nations Assembly to resource practical work toward a treaty for Arnhem Land.... Yolngu Nations Assembly continues to develop, but to progress our core issue of a treaty we think it necessary to have one of our own law people in a parliament of Australia. I have been selected for this job by the Assembly. ... The campaign for Nhulunbuy will now provide another opportunity for the electorate to pledge their support for treaty. If I win this seat, it will not only be a great victory for our Arnhem Land call for treaty, but a strong statement adding to the call for sovereign rights for Indigenous people across the continent. Treaty Now!

AIM - Be part of history in the making. - 2016
Every Commonwealth nation has a treaty with Indigenous peoples – except Australia.
Chosen by an Indigenous political structure, the Yolngu Nations Assembly, Yingiya Mark Guyula is running on Treaty in a majority Indigenous electorate in Nhulunbuy electorate in eastern Arnhem Land. This is historic, a huge step forward for Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty – and for our nation as a whole.
We all need Treaty to move forward. The path to our future passes through the past.
AIM is a supporter of Yingyia’s campaign: http://www.yingiya.net
