Traditional owners seek your assistance to save Arnhem land from oil and gas companies - 9 July 2013
Traditional Owners and the Protect Arnhem Land community campaign (based in Maningrida) are seeking the assistance of environment groups and Indigenous networks in Sydney to help raise awareness of the threat to Arnhem Land from oil and gas exploration.
Five traditional owners are travelling from Maningrida to Sydney in mid July and will hold a public event in Martin Place outside the offices of Paltar Petroleum at midday on Friday 19 July. ...

The Australian Greens today expressed their support of the calls by Clan Leaders and community members of Maningrida and Arnhem Land for the NT Government to reject applications for oil and gas exploration off the coast of Arnhem Land.
"Clan Leaders asked me to come and talk to them about their concerns about the impacts of oil and gas exploration and mining in their sea country. They clearly outlined their concerns that mining would harm their country, their identity and that damaging the land damages them," Senator Rachel Siewert, Australian Greens spokesperson on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues said following her visit to Maningrida today.
"Clan leaders have also asked for Marc Bruner , the CEO of mining company Paltar to visit Maningrida to speak to them about this issue. They have asked a number of times and are very concerned that he hasn't come to talk to them on their land about these serious concerns. Arnhem Elders and landowners are calling on the Northern Territory and Federal Governments to halt fracking in the Arnhem – on land and seas. While Traditional Owners can to some extent veto fracking on their lands, they cannot do anything to stop fracking in the sea.
Milingimbi Traditional Owner Ben Marrjarra Pascoe the nearby seas are their fishing grounds and the fracking will endanger them. Paltar Petroleum is planning to frack in the Arnhem Sea....

He said the government must “stop humbugging our area — stop humbugging the Earth”, drawing links between relentless resource extraction and climate change. “The rainbow serpent holds the Earth — if you dig it, it will move,” he said, referring to increasing “natural” disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones and fires.....

An Indigenous leader from Arnhem Land says attempts to stop oil and gas exploration in the region are failing.
Eddie Mason, a Traditional Owner from Maningrida, last year formed the group Protect Arnhem Land, but says it's "achieved nothing" because governments aren't listening to Indigenous people in the region.
He says mining companies are getting approvals to explore without any consultation with local communities....

...the stunning waters around Groote Eylandt in the north-western Gulf of Carpentaria have become the first area in Australia to have permanent and dedicated protection from seabed mining! Traditional Owners and the Anindilyakwa Land Council lead the charge to protect their
sea Country from industry who have been eyeing off their waters for rich manganese deposits beneath the sea floor. The decision to protect these waters is a great win for Traditional Owners, conservationists and fishers all of whom place the value of our marine life at far greater than the short term minerals beneath the waves.

Member of the Australian Greens and Australian Greens Whip Rachel Siewert who came to Maningrida and sat with a large group of Traditional Land Owners and heard their concerns with plans to take their views to parliament and lobby on their behalf. What a woman!.. THEN... TODAY... Senior Land Owner Eddie Mason presented a letter on Protect Arnhem Lands behalf, formally requesting (for the second time) a moratorium on all offshore oil, gas and mining exploration permits to the chief minister Adam Giles at a public meeting this morning....
